In the field of musicology, ancillary practices such as field work, source study, organology, as well as archiving and indexing of documented materials are fundamentally important as tools in gaining a comprehensive view and knowledge of musical cultures. Field work entails presence in the locus of research, while source study deals with music compositions in manuscripts and in print. Organology, on the other hand, is the study of musical instruments, their classificationsm social use and function; and archiving and indexing is the preservation of recorded music and their descriptions for study by generations or artist-scholars.

The combined event of a Forum and a Conference-Workshop on the Preservation of Asian Music is geared towards sharing of research materials and information, forging joint study projects, as well a uplifting standards in preserving and cataloguing music cultural objects in Asia.
