Musika Jornal is a revival of the scholarly periodical that saw the publication of three issues during the incumbency of Dr. Jose Maceda as Chair of the Department of Asian Music in the late 1970s (77, 78, 79).

A hiatus from 1989 to 2006 transpired. In 2004, Dr. Jose Maceda passed away, and the task of reviving the publication has fallen to the University of the Philippines Center for Ethnomusicology, under the current leadership of Dr. Ramon P. Santos. The maiden revival issue in December 2007 shall contain the proceedings of the international symposium on the “Theories of Performance in the Musics of Asia” that was held Feb. 27-28, 2007.

This refereed journal aims to provide a forum for the discussion of traditional musics in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, as well as the new music of contemporary composers from this geographic area. It is prepared by an editorial board comprised of faculty members and researchers from the College of Music, College of Arts and Letters and other units of the University of the Philippines that maintains close linkage with the UPCE. The journal appears at least once a year, or as many issues a year as there are articles to be published. These articles deal with contemporary music in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
