The 7th Symposium of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (ICTMD) Study Group on the Performing Arts of Southeast Asia (PASEA) will be held from June 20-26, 2024 with the University of the Philippines Visayas, University of the Philippines Diliman, Center for West Visayan Studies, UP College of Music, and the UP Center for Ethnomusicology as host institutions. The seven-day symposium will be held at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel in the historic city of Iloilo, accorded by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a City of Gastronomy in 2023.

The symposium themes, “Alternative Modernities and Evolving Identities in the Performing Arts of Southeast Asia” and “Beyond Analog: Navigating the Digital Landscape,” will bring together more than 70 local and international scholars, representing various Southeast Asian music and dance cultures. In addition to these two themes, PASEA 2024 also opens its doors to younger scholars and graduate students under the “New Research” category.

ICTMD-PASEA began in 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was formally established in 2009. The group brings together international scholars and practitioners of music and dance, encouraging the growth of conversations and scholarship on the music and dance cultures of Southeast Asia. The biennial symposium has been hosted by different Southeast Asian countries since 2010, and  PASEA 2024 is the Philippines’ second time to host the event, with the University of the Philippines at the helm.

This international conglomeration of artists and scholars will be an exciting space for cultural exchange. It will feature paper presentations, roundtable discussions, film showing, and performances exhibiting local artists–from indigenous communities and their masters, and representative performing groups from the different units of the University of the Philippines.

The symposium is open to all. You may learn more about the program and register at: www.pasea.upethnom.com. Students, teachers, musicians, researchers, and the general public are invited to join us in this beautiful celebration of Southeast Asian culture.
