The UP Center for Ethnomusicology (UPCE) in collaboration with the UP College of Music Musicology Department held a very special screening on Thursday, March 15, 2019, 3:00 PM, of Sean Linezo’s documentary of Maceda’s Cassettes 100.

This experimental film documented the Cassettes 100 performance at TPAM — Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama, last February 10, 2019. This was held at the Kanagawa Arts Theater Atrium (KAAT), directed by Aki Onda and choreographed and staged by the ANTIBODIES Collective. Serendipitously, the event coincided with a retrospective of Kidlat Tahimik’s works which Linezo happily attended. Encountering the works of these two icons of Philippine art spurred him on a journey to learn more about his Philippine roots and the documentary is his way of sharing the spark most especially to those who weren’t able to attend in Japan.

Post screening discussion

The film screening itself was well attended by students, faculty of the UP College of Music, most notably, National Artist for Music Dr. Ramon Pagayon Santos and a representative of the sound art movement in Manila. There was a short discussion after the film. Dr. Baes, who directed Cassettes 100 in the Philippines last 2017, talked about his experience directing the piece and how Dr. Maceda’s works remain relevant until today. He also told the story of his first encounter with Dr. Maceda and his works. Dr. Santos happily reminisced about his time with Dr. Maceda.

All in all, the film screening ended on a high note, successfully opening a dialogue Linezo was looking for. The UPCE would like to thank everyone who made the screening a huge success and acknowledge the UP College of Music Department of Musicology for their wholehearted support.
